Outliers
We met with Júlia Juste at one of her recommended spots in Barcelona, Casa Bonay. Because Julia does just this, she travels to different corners of the world to find the most charming one and share it with those who follow her.
Her personal project is called Outliers which means “a thing that is very different from others” and it was born to satisfy the need that she had of sharing all those places that had that special quality. She is not only interested in luxury, she shows expensively beautiful hotels but also small and tasteful rural stays.
1. What is your project Outliers and how did you come up with this name?
Outliers is a website where you can find beautiful places to stay around the world. From hotels to guesthouses and airbnb.
The word Outlier means “a person or thing differing from all other members of a particular group or set”. I learned it when I was studying statistics during my business degree. By that time I already enjoyed finding places with that “special thing” that set them apart from the rest. And I linked it to the word Outlier, because all these places I like to find are different from the rest.
2. How did this project begin?
It began just like a hobby. I had my instagram account for a long time where I shared the places I was visiting but during the lockdown in 2020 I decided to open a website. I used almost all the free time that I had besides my actual job to work on this website.
3. What makes a space or a location be worthy of being featured on Outliers?
It’s hard to say. The curation I do on Outliers is 100% subjective. I feature the places that I would love to visit or that I’ve been and liked. Most of the time it has to do with the aesthetics, I have to admit that it’s what I care about the most. But I also appreciate authenticity. The places that I usually like the most are those that are true to their origins, that respect the place and history where they are from.
4. Who or what would you say inspires you in your day to day?
My mother. She has taught me to appreciate beauty and she keeps teaching me how to look at things.
Besides her, I really enjoy following travel or architecture photographers that have a gift in telling stories. Some of them are Beatriz Janer, Silvia Gil Roldan, Pia Riverola, Marina Denisova, Salva Lopez…
5. What do you think Outliers has allowed you to do that you wouldn’t have been able to do if it weren’t for this project?
Meeting very different people. It is what I enjoy the most. Not only in my trips but also through social media I’ve met incredible people this year with whom I share my passion for aesthetics and travel.

I work as a freelancer in other projects too. But when I’m working on Outliers most of the time I’m researching online, hours and hours, to find the places that will be featured on my website outliersguide.com
I also travel a lot, mostly in Spain, and while I’m on a trip I combine computer work with “field” work discovering new places and creating content out of it.
8. Where do you see this project growing into in the next few years?
I want Outliers to be the travel website that is on the top of mind of everyone who loves aesthetics, design and authenticity.
